While in Jamaica he had witnessed “some disgusting scenes”— perhaps slave auctions or slave ﬂoggings— and he came to believe that the continuous inﬂux of new slaves from Africa had a corrupting inﬂuence on the sugar planters, who tended to abuse their workers because they could easily buy new ones.
Many of the problems from 1762 persisted. The proportion of youngsters under age twenty was even smaller than in 38 A Tale of Two Plantations 1762, and the proportion of females was also smaller. The sex ratio had risen from 131:100 to 134:100. The inventory of December 1789 also indicates a dismal health status for nearly all of the older Mesopotamia slaves. Only 14 percent of the 102 men and women past age thirty-ﬁve in 1789 were described as “able”; 86 percent were described as sick, weak, or inﬁ rm; and 13 percent were so incapacitated that they were listed as invalids unable to work.
